Kitchen islands are one of the increasing kitchen design trends that never go out of style but could be expensive to install. Being one of the focal points of the room, the kitchen island evolved from being just a space for preparing food to being an increasingly functional furniture.

realestate.com.au[3] listed some of the trends for kitchen islands this year.

The site predicts that thin bench tops would increase in popularity this year as thick stone bench tops may be too much for some homeowners. Aside from that, kitchen islands could be a great way to sit down guests inside the kitchen, so open-ended kitchen island with legs would be the best way to have it. With these kinds of kitchen islands, there is a free space for sitting on both sides, and they could also be perfect furniture to transform a regular kitchen to an eat-in kitchen.

For those who are on a budget, Real Simple[4] has some tips on making simple kitchen islands from old materials at home. The site says that old dressers and bookshelves could be transformed into stylish and functional kitchen islands. It is important to use dressers or bookshelves that were raised to the same height as the countertops. With a little paint, these items could be transformed into a kitchen island that can complement the color of the room. These items can also offer great space for storing kitchen items like spices or utensils.

Aside from old dressers and bookshelves, a simple desk table can also be used as kitchen islands. Desks with drawers on the side are also great storage place for other kitchen items.

Wine crates can also be transformed into stylish kitchen islands by adding interesting details on it. Painting these tables with bright colors can accentuate and add personality to the room.
