How To Keep Your Hair Looking Good While You're On The Move

The key to good styling is in the product you use and knowing which is best to use both in your daily routine and during certain situations. With that in mind, we wanted to explore what products are best suited to help men while on the go and moving. So whether you want to keep your hair in check during a work commute, when you are working out, at a music festival or other major event, or when traveling, the following tips and products will keep you looking good.
"Utilizing product is always great for control, especially for those constantly on the go," says expert Adam Maclay for ABTP. "As a New Yorker, I'd hate to think what my hair would look like at the end of the day without product. The type of product you use is dependent upon the desired style and your hair type."
When it comes to selecting product, men should know that are two ways to go with products when styling hair, says Theri DeJoode, American Crew Global Technical Director: placement or pliable. "Placement products are gels, and have long-term memory. They must be dried into the hair — either by air drying or blow drying," says DeJoode, adding that the placement products offer the longest memory and are typically used as a base product. "After it's dried and broken down, a finishing pliable product is used to detail the hair. Pliable products are the creams, waxes and pomades. They have a variable memory and allow for the user to run his hands through his hair at any time and reset the style."
For Fitness and Being Active
For working out, a pliable product with a beeswax or base is the best for holding style says DeJoode. "Lanolin wax is also available in a pliable product, but heat breaks the lanolin down faster than the beeswax. Heat, water and product are the three elements that can change style, so keep in mind that body heat and sweat can affect the overall look. I recommend American Crew's Fiber[1] puck with a matte finish or their Molding Clay[2] puck with a medium shin e.
Both have high hold and are great products to keep your hair in place during a hard workout. If the hair moistens with sweat, the hands can easily push the hair back into place and the product will reset.
Also, for an active lifestyle, product cocktails often have best results, says Maclay. "Try mixing a nickel size amount of Jack Black Body-Building Hair Gel[5] with a dime size of Jack Black Clay Pomade[6] and apply to damp hair," he says, adding that this will give the hair plenty of hold from the gel as the pomade gives playability to the style.
For Commuting And On The Go
When expecting a morning commute, DeJoode recommends styling your hair with American Crew's Firm Hold Styling Gel[7] and combing it into place with a comb or fingers to offer elevation and direction. "Medium or high hold gels work well for those anti-gravity styles. Put a puck in your pocket so when you get to where you're going, you can just dip in and add to the style for the finished look with separation." DeJoode also shares that American Crew just released a limited run of their classic styling pucks as part of their partnership with Elvis Presley that can work great for these on-the-go styles. "You can use their Pomade and Grooming Cream pucks for high shine, and their Defining Paste or Fiber pucks for a matte finish. Best of all, each puck features a unique image of Elvis!"
For the man on the go, Maclay says to make sure to keep product in your gym/work bag. "Also be sure to ensure your haircut is well maintained, as the shape of your style is key! With a great shape, your hairstyle can have versatility in style. For a textured style, use the Jack Black Wax Pomade[8] and apply with your fingertips in a twisting motion."
Qualities, Technology And Ingredients To Look For
DeJoode says if you want hold and memory, you want to look for products with copolymers. "American Crew's Firm Hold Styling Gel has a dual polymer action with flake-free and alcohol-free formulas. If you want the set-and-go style, use a gel, style into place, then practice no-touch human resistance. This style will remain all day!"
Then beeswax is great for hold and lanolin wax is great for setting a style in which you can run your hands through, DeJoode says. "The combinations of these offer a variety of options in American Crew's special edition Elvis pucks. Use the Fiber puck for the firmest matte finish and the Pomade puck for a medium hold and high gloss finish."
