Safety tips from Irondequoit Police

As the temperatures begin to rise so can crime, and not just in the city.

Irondequoit police are reminding people to lock their cars. Investigators are working to find the person responsible for a string of thefts from vehicles at the end of April.

Officer Andrew Whitaker is part of the Irondequoit Police Department's Community Service Unit. He says if your car doors are unlocked, it only takes 20 seconds for a criminal to open the door, steal what they want and take off.

Officer Whitaker also says not to leave an extra car key in your vehicle, and take your garage door opener with you. That can give someone quick access to your house.

Another way to stay safe is by joining a neighborhood watch group. "You don't have to patrol each day, its more neighbors watching out for neighbors," says Officer Whitaker. "Seeing something suspicious, calling 911 and not thinking should I call or should I not. I always says it's better to call than not call."
