Businesses must hand over tips to staff working in restaurants, hotels and other service industries across the country under new plans unveiled by the government.
The new rules will make it clear that tips should be passed on directly to staff.
"We've been very clear. As a one nation government we want workers who earn a tip to be able to keep it. That's why I, like many others, was disappointed by the tipping practices of some of our well-known chains. This has to change," said business secretary Sajid Javid[1].
Current voluntary rules introduced in 2009 do not cover how tips should be divided between the staff and the employer. Some firms use tips to top up staff wages.
The proposals will also make it clearer to customers that a tip is discretionary.
A consultation on the plans will run until the end of June.
