2016 Rubiton Stakes Tips

One of the key support races on Caulfield's CF Orr Stakes Day program this weekend in Melbourne is the Rubiton Stakes 2016, betting tips for the short distance sprint found below.

Politeness

Running as Caulfield Race 5 at 3:30pm (AEDT), this season's $200,000 Group 2 Schweppes Rubiton Stakes[1] (1100m) features 11 hopefuls led in betting through Ladbrokes.com.au[2] by Lonhro filly Heatherly ($3.60).

This progressive three-year-old is up against the older horses after winning against her own kind at Flemington over the same distance last time out on January 30 and is up in grade.

She shoots for her third straight win and is in black-type company for the first time since a second to Ready For Victory in the Listed Festival Stakes (1000m) last March.

Four other runners are at single figures in the latest Rubiton Stakes betting markets this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival including market mover Politeness ($4.20 into $3.90).

Robert Smerdon's returning Group 1 Myer Classic winner is first-up having her maiden start since a brave second when just a neck off Turn Me Loose in the Emirates Stakes last November.

She trialled nicely at Cranbourne on February 8, has plenty of class, boasts three previous wins at the track and is drawn for the win in barrier four with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.

So will the female gallopers prove the ones to beat or is there an upset Rubiton Stakes result on the agenda from the likes of multiple Group 2 winning four-year-old Éclair Choice ($6), Denman stallion Kuro ($8) or the Team Hawkes-trained Fastnet Rock filly Lake Geneva ($8)?

1st

#3 Politeness ($3.90[3])

Surprised Politeness is not the favourite but she is firming fast and represents great value for her first-up run. She was on fire during the spring winning the Myer Classic and just missing out on the Emirates Stakes victory in a very brave run during the Cup Carnival. She has a nice resuming record (7-3-0-1) and looked fit in her Cranbourne trial when fourth to Lizard Island earlier in the month. A three-time winner at the track, she has the right draw (4) and will be flying home late.

2nd

#1 Éclair Choice ($6[4])

Carrying the top weight (58.5kg), the Phillip Stokes-trained California Dane gelding enjoyed back-to-back Group 2 Melbourne wins to cap off his strong spring campaign last time in. That included the Caulfield Sprint at this track, and he is a gun over Saturday's distance (4-2-1-1). Also should be flying first-up (5-2-1-0) based on his easy trial win at home on February 5 and will enjoy things his way from barrier two.

3rd

#6 Tried And Tired ($14[5])

Good price offered for this consistent Leon & Troy Corstens-trained six-year-old who comes off back-to-back seconds in black-type Melbourne races from January. The latest saw him cross just a neck off the Barton Stakes winner over 1400m on Australia Day, and he needs to handle the step down in distance. He has run well over 1000 – 1200m previously however and is in good form so can surprise.
